Tennessee man dies in accident

A Chattanooga, Tenn., man has been identified as the fatality in a two-vehicle accident about 1 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 64 at mile post 71.5.

Adam Lee Smith, 36, was eastbound in a van and failed to reduce speed for backed up traffic as a result of a construction zone located at the Interstate 57/64 split. Smith ran into the right rear corner of a semi trailer operated by Roger Laughlin, 51, of Wright City, Mo. Laughlin and a 15-year-old passenger, Corey Joseph Laughlin, were not injured.

A passenger in Smith’s van, Matthew David Fitzgerald, 33, also of Chattanooga, was first taken to Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon and then airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital with serious injuries.

Traffic on Interstate 64 was diverted at the Woodlawn exit to Illinois Highway 15.
