Compliance check results in two citations

Staff Report

MT. VERNON — Citations were issued to two bartenders at Mt. Vernon businesses following alcohol compliance checks deployed on Friday night by the Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Narcotics Division.

Employees found to be in violation of city ordinances by selling alcohol to an underage minor acting under the supervision of undercover police officers were: Amelia Ellis, 31, of The Crossing; and Clara Rutherford, 69, of the Hideout. A total of 14 businesses were checked during the detail.

All other businesses which were checked properly asked for identification and refused sales to the underage person, a news release stated.

These investigations are conducted in an attempt to bring awareness to the public and businesses involved in the sales of alcohol as to the ease of which minors may purchase alcohol when employees become complacent and fail to check identification as required by law.

These investigations will continue in the future and business owners should see that employees are conducting identification checks as required, the release stated.
