JEFFERSON COUNTY — A Valier man was killed in a single-vehicle accident just inside the Jefferson-Franklin counties line early Saturday morning.
Ronnie Stroud Jr., 23, was pronounced dead shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday by Coroner Eddie Joe Marks, although the accident is believed to have happened around 4 a.m.
The accident happened on Illinois Highway 148, three miles north of Sesser, near the Emerson City Road.
According to reports, Stroud was southbound and ran off the roadway. The driver overcorrected, came back across both lanes of traffic and ran off the left side of the road. The car struck several trees, overturned, and came to rest down a large embankment.
State Police say excessive speed may have contributed to the accident.
Stroud’s vehicle was discovered by an Illinois State Police trooper who saw skid marks on the highway.
Illinois State Police were assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Sesser Fire Department and the coroner’s office.
