Photo competition calls for entries

MT. VERNON — The Annual Shrode Photography Competition and Exhibit will be held Oct. 27 through Dec. 22, but the deadline for entries will be Aug. 30.

The competition is open to all professional and amateur artists 18 years old and older living in Southern Illinois. Accepted entries may be from photographic film and digital photographs. The exhibited photos must be printed in a professional manner and have quality resolution that matches the image submitted for judging. All work must be the original work of the entrant, executed within the past three years and not shown at a previous Cedarhurst/Shrode Art Center competition of exhibition.

The judge this year will be Paul Aho, dean of the Paducah School of Art, West Kentucky Community and Technical College, Paducah.

"Paul creates bright vibrant abstract paintings and has a long successful history as a photographer," information states. "He currently teaches and coordinates the photography program at the Paducah School of Art."

Submissions must be digital and submitted on a non-returnable CD or flash drive in .jpg format. Each file must be labeled with the artist's name and title of the artwork. No e-mail submissions will be eligible. Each artist may submit up to three photographs for a onetime, non-refundable $20 entry fee — the fee for Cedarhurst members is $17. A list of accepted works will be e-mailed to the artists by the end of the day on Sept. 25.

Entrants who are chosen for the exhibit must frame or present their work in a professional manner with braided wire attached for hanging. Delivery of accepted artwork must arrive no later than Friday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m.

An awards ceremony and opening reception has been scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 26, with the award presentation at 7 p.m. Awards will be $400 for Best of Show; $250 for First Place; $200 for Second Place and $175 for Third Place. Honorable Mention certificates may be given at the judge's discretion.

Additional information about the competition is available by calling 242-1236, ext. 248.
