Preparations underway for Fall Fest

MT. VERNON — Citizens are urged to "get creative" and participate in the Fall Fest Parade, slated for Oct. 19.

"We have sent out parade forms to those who participated last year, but we will need even more entries," said Bonnie Jerdon of Mt. Vernon Festivals, Inc. "We have chosen a grand marshal, and we have started hearing from area bands for the band competition."

The theme of this year's parade is "Superheroes Get Creative" and the grand marshal of the parade is a real-life superhero — Samantha Stanford.

"We wanted our own superhero as grand marshal," Jerdon said. "She was recommended and we decided she was a perfect fit for the role. She is a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves, a native of Woodlawn and has served in Iraq."

There are 40 entries for the parade so far, and many more are needed. There are six bands which have confirmed they will be participating in the marching band competition portion of the parade.

The Fall Fest will get underway on Friday, Oct. 18, with the Beaucoup Bottom Band at 5 p.m. downtown; Jordan Carter and Justice will be performing at 8:30 p.m. A carnival, kids zone, and the Tri-State Treasure Hunt will be starting at 5 p.m. The newest event for the fest will be held at the Mt. Vernon Outland Airport — The United Way Balloon Glow.

Saturday entertainment gets underway at 11 a.m. with Polly Launay, We Got It Covered at noon, Ferttile Soil at 4 p.m., the Led Zepplin tribute band Trampled Underfoot at 6:30 p.m. and the Journey tribute band Escape at 9 p.m.

While entertainment is going on all day, the carnival will be held; the vendors market starts at 8 a.m. and the Great Pumpkin Race 5K run gets underway at 8 a.m. The kids zone opens at 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the parade starts at 2 p.m.
