Railroad work prompts detours

MT. VERNON — Work on the Union Pacific Railroad is prompting more than one street closure and detours.

Work began Monday on the railroad crossing at Illinois Route 142, causing detours for hundreds of motorists living in the south eastern portion of the county as well as workers coming in for shifts at Continental Tire the Americas. The work is scheduled to be completed by this morning.

But, a second road closure is expected in the city on Sept. 17 and Sept. 18 at the Union Pacific crossing on Main Street on the east side of town.

"Beginning at 7 a.m., a Union Pacific Railroad crew will make repairs to the Illinois 15 eastbound railroad crossing on the east edge of Mt. Vernon," information from the Illinois Department of Transportation states. "The road will remained closed until repairs are complete on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 5:30 p.m."

Detours will be marked, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The detour is expected to take motorists on Fourth Street to Casey Avenue,, across the railroad crossing there, then to Second Street to Main Street.
