MT. VERNON — The Illinois Department of Transportation has opened all six lanes of Interstates 57/64 through Mt. Vernon.
The opening of all lanes happened just before noon on Wednesday, according to Brooke Taylor of IDOT.
"Motorists may encounter minor delays next week while our subcontractor finishes pavement markings," information from Taylor states.
Construction was slated to be completed by Dec. 1, a date city retailers and officials have been anticipating. The construction has been identified as a factor in a downturn in retail sales as well as the attached sales taxes. Motorists have been less inclined to get off at the Mt. Vernon exits during the construction and traffic delays have backed up motorists for miles north and south of the city.
"We believe the decrease in sales taxes is mostly attributed to the work on the Interstate," City Finance Director Merle Hollmann said earlier this year." We really have no way of knowing for sure, but if you look at the diesel tax, it's way down, and that directly relates to Interstate traffic."
