Family Festival offers hay rides and more

MT. VERNON — — Families are invited to join in the fun for the third Family Festival day at Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, Oct. 13.

George Bryant, City Parks and Facilities director, said the first year the Family Festival was held, it was at Fairmont Park and there was a weenie roast and hay rides for the children.

Since then, it has expanded and moved to Veterans Memorial Park. Families can enjoy free food, including hot dogs and chili, hay rides, bouncy houses, face painting and other activities.

“What we do is work with the community getting contributions for the events,” Bryant said. The city general corporate fund also set aside $1,000 for the event, obtained from liquor violation fines.

The Family Festival is part of the Family Adventure Series, which started with the family movie night in the park, Bryant said.

“People just love this and that is why we just keep tweaking programs and adding activities,” he said, adding the Parks and Recreation Department staff are always working to find activities for families which are either free or inexpensive to attend. “I think this just exemplifies what we have been promoting here about outside family activities.”

The Family Festival, which is from 4 to 6 p.m., will be held south of the Rolland W. Lewis Community Building. The food will be served out of the south shelter and the hay ride will load along the walking trail and travel through the north loop of the walking trail. Bryant added if the weather is not conducive to outside activities, the festival will be moved inside.

“It’s all pretty well contained in one general outdoor area,” Bryant said. “If we run into problems with the weather, we will hold whatever activities we can do in the Rolland Lewis Building.”
