MT. VERNON — A Texico man was sentenced to seven years in prison on Thursday.
John R. Powell, 28, entered an open plea to a burglary charge several weeks ago. As a result, the state agreed to a sentencing cap of no more than 10 years, according to State’s Attorney Doug Hoffman.
A Grand Jury returned a bill of indictment against Powell on June 25, alleging on June 3 the defendant committed the offense of burglary in that he entered a building in the 1100 block of Maple Street with the intent to commit a theft.
Judge David Overstreet accepted the agreed upon sentence of seven years to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Powell will also be required to pay court costs within six months after his release from prison.
Powell was also placed on 30 months’ conditional discharge on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender.
No witnesses were called during the hearing, said Assistant State’s Attorney Darin Rice.
Powell was arrested recently at the Red Carpet Inn in Dix for allegedly failing to appear in court on the burglary charge.
