---- — Secretary of State Charles F. Carpenter has appointed 77 supervisors and inspectors to man downstate stations, which have been closed since July 1.

Harold Lee Carr, son of businessman Lelan Carr, has been named administrative assistant to the superintendent at East Alton-Wood River High School. The second annual Sweet Corn and Watermelon Festival opens at 6 p.m. today with bicycle races set for the fairground tracks.

A Mt. Vernon native Larry Kite of Centralia has taken a key position in the Illinois Bureau of Employment Security and will be headquartered in Chicago.

A Waltonville couple was killed early this morning in a single-vehicle accident on a county road west of Nason in Jefferson County.
