District 80 business director gets certified

MT. VERNON — District 80 Director of Business Nancy Herzing is now a certified administrator of school finance and operations.

The new designation means she has a certified specialty in her field. Herzing is one of only 11 school business directors in the state who have this certification, she said.

“It just tells the school board and the people that I have the qualifications to do the job,” Herzing said. “I'm an accountant by education. This is a certification that I have a specialty in school business.”

Herzing was recognized for her achievement at Wednesday night's District 80 Board of Education meeting.

To be certified in this manner, Herzing had to pass two exams offered by the Association of School Business Officials International early this year.

The first test covered basic accounting while the second dealt with overall school district operations.

“It's a very comprehensive test you take,” Herzing said. “There's no real way to study. I did review some of the items I don't work with every day, but it's really a test of your knowledge.”

Herzing began working for District 80 as an administrative assistant for finance in August 1999. Then, about eight years ago, she was promoted to director of business.

As part of her job, Herzing works with the district's budget and oversees other financial matters.

About five years ago, ASBO International began offering the business director certification.

Herzing said she was interested in pursuing the designation and the timing worked out for her to take the tests in January and February.

Herzing's educational background is in accounting. She said there's no real college major for her current position as a school business director, which makes the ASBO designation all the more significant.

Superintendent Mike Green said he's very impressed with what Herzing has achieved.
