MT. VERNON — —
Main and Broadway will be closed at the fifth street railroad crossings on May 22 and May 23 for rail repairs.
"They will do one of the crossings on Wednesday and the other crossing on Thursday," said Dave Barner of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Barner said the road closure was requested by the Norfolk Southern Railroad to make repairs at the crossing area.
"At the crossing itse3lf, they are replacing the crossing surface and the tracks underneath the crossing surface," Barner explained.
According to information from IDOT, no traffic will be allowed through the construction area while workers are present on the two days, but will be open in the evenings.
"They are supposed to do one, finish that work in one day, then reopen the crossing," Barner said. "They will then close the other crossing and do the work in one day, and re-open it to traffic that evening."
Barner said a detour has been mapped with the help of Mt. Vernon Public Works Director Matt Fauss.
"For the west bound crossing, which is Main Street, motorists will go north on Fourth Street, west on Harrison, then south on North North Sixth Street, which will bring you back to Main Street," Barner said. "For the east bound crossing, motorists will go south on Sixth Street, east on Jordan Street, then north on South Fourth Street, which will bring them back to Broadway."
During the days of construction, motorists are asked to use caution when using the detours and to be watchful for any work crews near the construction area.
