---- — MT. VERNON — Toys for Kids of Jefferson County recognized a honorary elf.

Kathleen Moon was surprised by members of the organization on Saturday at Big Lots. Family and co-workers looked on while Moon was presented with a Honorary Elf award. Moon became instantly surprised and teared up.

“I am honored,” Moon said.

The Honorary Elf award is presented for dedication and commitment to the Toys for Kids program.

Moon has been giving back to children for years, and is now honored for her efforts in Jefferson County.

After Moon moved to the Mt. Vernon area in 1968, Toys for Tots (sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps) was the only toy donation organization that was around, Moon said. Toys for Tots helped her and her family, and being able to give back to Toys for Kids is her way of giving back, she said.

“I love seeing the smiles especially with kids,” Moon said.

Moon stated how much she loves children and being able to help them. She buys a toy every month to donate to the effort. She suggests that everyone should buy a toy on the 25th day of every month so each person will be able to donate 12 toys a year — which has been her goal.

Moon has eight children and expressed how much an organization like Toys for Kids means to her.

“... Iif it wasn’t for organizations like Toys for Kids and Toys for Tots, my kids wouldn’t have had much,” Moon said.

Moon’s eldest daughter Denille was present for the award. She said she was proud of her mother and for all she has done over the years.

“She has always worked for minimum wage or barely above it,” Her daughter said. “She has always been able to take care of herself and been able to give back even though she hasn’t had a whole lot herself. She is a a big giver.”

Toys for Kids of Jefferson County is an all volunteer organization that donates new toys to less fortunate children. It serves around 800 to 1,200 kids each year.

About $20 per child is used for gifts for children aged birth to nine years old; and $25 for those ages 12 to 14, according to Rochelle Bond, the treasurer for the organization.

“We shop all year long to find the best deals,” Bond said.

Preparation for gift donations each year starts the day after the gift give-away, Bond said.

The Toys for Kids of Jefferson County toy gift give away will be held Dec. 7, at the Times Square Mall, from 8 a.m. to noon.
