---- — BLUFORD — Funds for the American Cancer Society will be raised through the Star of Bethlehem 5K race on Dec. 7.
During the inaugural race, runners will contribute to the Jefferson County Relay For Life program.
Stacy Hulbert, the captain of Team Lifesavers, is hoping the event will not only help raise money, but also bring the community of Bluford closer.
“I am personally interested in seeing a restoration of the civic pride and life of the village of Bluford,” Hulbert stated. “I feel strongly that events such as this could help in some small way to promote a return of that civic pride on behalf of the residents of Bluford.”
Although community pride is one factor in coordinating the Star of Bethlehem 5K run/walk, Hulbert and her family have been touched by the devastating effects of cancer. Their memories and the evils of cancer are the motivation for the race.
“The illness hits close to home,” Hulbert said.
The run/walk will start at New Life Baptist Church on the corner of Fourth and Roberts street at 10 a.m. on Dec. 7.
The registration fee per runner is $20. Registration can be done the day of the race at 8:30 a.m. at the church. Pre-registration is also underway with an event goal of at least 45 runners.
During the event there will be Christmas carolers singing along the course. Refreshments will be available for those attending and they may choose from cookies and hot chocolate.
The race will start and end directly behind the church and will run east to turn onto Chestnut Street. Runners will continue past the Bluford Grade School and onto Sixth Street to Paul Avenue. The course will continue south to Ice Plant Road to Louie Street, where runners will turn around and run the course in reverse back to the church to the finish line.
Awards will be presented to the overall runners following the conclusion of the race, as well as top overall walkers. Awards will be given for the top three male and top three female runners and the top three runners in the age groups — 12 and younger; 13 to 19; 20 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 to 49; 50 to 59; 60 to 69; and 70 and older. Awards will also be presented to the top five overall walkers.
