MT. VERNON — A pirate theme is likely to bring out some shady characters when the Jefferson County Relay for Life sponsors a 5K run/walk early next month.
Dubbed the “Curibbean Run/Walk,” the fundraiser will be held May 4 at the Rend Lake Visitors Center in Benton.
Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the race begins at 10 a.m. The registration fee is $30 for the run and $10 for the kids 1K fun run/walk.
“We got a great opportunity from Tyler Toyota, the sponsor, so we decided to do a 5K. It’s something that people are interested in and 5K’s are popular. It’s a great way to get people moving, and it’s great exercise,” said Relay for Life Chairman Ashley Withrow. “This is the first time we’re doing it, so we don’t know how many people to expect. We’re just trying to get the word out, and hopefully, it’s something we can do every year.”
Participants are encouraged to come in pirate-themed attire.
“It’s something that came out of one of our committee meetings,” Withrow said. “Since the event is being held at Rend Lake around water we thought it would be fun.” Withrow said the event will be held rain or shine.
There will be prizes for the overall male and female runners, and in each age division for men and women, which include 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and over. A best costume prize will also be awarded.
Race information is available on the Relay for Life website at relayforlife.org/jefferson.il or the organization’s Facebook page, and also on the River to River Running Club’s website. Registration will be accepted on the day of the race or forms will be accepted at Tyler Toyota up to the day of the race. For more information you may call Withrow at 237-8469 or Stacy Hulbert at 315-4232.
Withrow said plans are progressing for another “first” event sponsored by Relay for Life. A Bark for Life will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on May 18 at Veterans Memorial Park. That event is also being sponsored by Tyler Toyota.
“It’s an American Cancer Society event that will honor the caregiving qualities of our canine best friends,” Withrow said. Awards will be presented for the best dressed, best trick and owner/canine lookalike. Food, music and kids activities will be available.
More information about this event is also posted on the organization’s web site.
