---- — INA — The Rend Lake College Board of Trustees Tuesday approved a $223,500 bid for a planned renovation of the college’s Anatomy & Physiology Lab.

Funding for the project comes from a Title III Pathways to Success in Health Careers Grant, worth up to $2.25 million over a five-year period.

Terry Wilkerson, RLC president, said the lab renovation is a “very essential piece” of the Title III improvements planned for the college.

“It’s a critical expansion as we expand our offerings in health care,” Wilkerson said. “It benefits all of our students who have an interest in science.”

The bid for the work came from Evrard-Strang Construction, Inc., out of Marion.

A total of nine construction bids were received for the project. Evrard-Strang was chosen based on “price and past experience” with the college, states an RLC news release.

The total estimated cost of the lab renovation is $254,567, which includes architectural fees and other expenses.

Plans are for the renovation to begin in the next two weeks and be finished by June 1, said Randall Shively, physical plant director for the college.

RLC officials say the renovation is just one of a number of initiatives being funded by the Title III grant.

Last month, two new Health Studies employees were hired and on Tuesday the RLC Board appointed Kathy Evans as the Title III activity director/curriculum specialist.

All of these positions are being paid for with the Title III grant.

In addition, the grant will allow RLC to make some major changes to its Allied Health Division, including starting new programs, buying equipment and launching an Allied Health Student Success Center.

Also, the grant will fund curricula revisions and the development of new Health Studies advising and tutoring systems and a Health Studies Success Center.

Other RLC Board actions Tuesday included:

n Appointment of Megan Rounds as a STARS/TRIO/Student Support Services Advisor.

n Appointment of Katherine M. Hunter as an administrative assistant for the Mining and Industrial Department.

n Approval of creating the position and job description for an administrative assistant for the Rend Lake College Foundation. The board also approved advertising for this position.

n Approval of the resignation of Christina Schuster as parent services coordinator with Project Child.

n Approval of the termination of Wayne Caplinger as groundskeeper, effective immediately.
