Mother, son drown
BONNIE — A mother and her 9-year-old son died Saturday morning when the Jeep they occupied ran off Illinois Highway 37 and plunged into a creek.
Illinois State Police identified the victims as Melanie May, 34, and 9-year-old Aaron T. May, both of Benton.
The Mays were passengers in the Jeep, operated by 19-year-old Nicholas Rakas, who was transported to Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon with non-life threatening injuries. Rakas was found on Interstate 57 by Ina Chief of Police Travis Allen and was taken to the nearby Love’s Truck Stop until EMS personnel arrived.
Police say Rakas was southbound on 37 shortly after 1 a.m., north of East Adams Road and south of Bonnie when he crossed the centerline and traveled onto the east edge of the roadway where it struck a guard rail. The Jeep continued past the guard rail rolling into Atchison Creek where it came to rest on its top.
Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks said the Mays’ drown in the accident.
Services for the two victims will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The obituaries can be found on Page 2 in today’s publication.
