MT. VERNON — —
One of the events postponed due to Thursday's winter storm — the Jefferson County Relay for Life kickoff — has been rescheduled.
Ashley Withrow, campaign chairman, said the kickoff will now be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Mother Odelia Room in the medical complex building at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center. The event is being sponsored by Orion Petro Corp., based in Mt. Vernon.
"Due to the weather on Thursday, we thought it would be best to postpone the kickoff and reschedule it for next week," Withrow said.
"It's an open house style. All team captains, team members, committee members and anyone interested in learning how to get involved in the fight against cancer are invited," Withrow said of the kickoff. "You can pick up team materials or register a new team."
Relay branded items will be distributed. Free food and refreshments will also be available.
Last summer, 22 teams participated in Relay for Life. A goal of $80,000 for this year's campaign has been established. This year's event will be held from 6 p.m. on June 14 to 6 a.m. on June 15 at Mt. Vernon Township High School's J.D. Shields Stadium.
Teams will camp out through the evening, and one person from each team will be walking around the track throughout the event, according to Withrow. Several ceremonies and fun activities have been planned, she added.
"Relay for Life is a life-changing event that everyone in the community is invited to come and celebrate the lives of people that have battled cancer and to remember loved ones we've lost to cancer and to fight back against the disease," Withrow said. "We do it overnight because cancer never sleeps. It is a relay event, not a race."
The Jefferson County chapter of Relay for Life is hosting a run/walk on May 4, starting at the Rend Lake Visitors Center; and a Bark for Life pet-friendly event will be held.
