BONNIE — —
An 18-year-old Mt. Vernon man was killed Thursday night after the bicycle he was riding on Illinois Highway 37 was struck by a pickup truck, the Jefferson County coroner said Friday.
Anthony Swainston was pronounced dead at the scene about 1.5 miles north of Bonnie near the intersection of the highway and Davis Road. Coroner Eddie Joe Marks said Swainston was killed upon impact.
A 911 call to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office regarding the incident was received at 7:25 p.m.
Marks said Swainston and another person were riding their bikes southbound on the highway; Swainston was in the southbound lane and the other rider was in the northbound lane. The pickup truck he said, driven by Blake Field of Mt. Vernon, was southbound when it came over a crest in the highway and came upon the two riders, both of whom were wearing dark clothing and were without reflectors or lights on their bicycles.
Marks said Field was driving within the speed limit, believed to be 55 mph, and attempted to drive between the two bicyclists but that Swainston “pulled right into his path.” Neither the second rider, nor Field or two passengers in his vehicle were injured.
No tickets were issued but the incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office, according to a press release issued by the office. A spokesperson would not comment beyond the press release.
Swainston’s body was taken to the Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Funeral arrangements are pending.
