Public assistance sought in burglaries

---- — The Jefferson County Crimestoppers are seeking the public's help in finding the person or persons responsible for more than 33 burglaries in the area.There have been 33 burglaries reported since November 2012, with 17 within the city limits and 16 in the county. A $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the burglars is being offered by the Jefferson County Crimestoppers.The residential burglaries all happen in the same manner. Entrance is made to the home during the late evening or early morning hours, with the target most commonly an elderly resident's home. The homeowner is unaware their home has been burglarized until they notice missing cash and stolen jewelry. Sometimes, the victim's have noticed forced entry to the residence. In some cases, the elderly resident was home asleep during the burglary.Anyone who may have seen or heard anything about the person or persons involved in the crime are urged to call the Mt. Vernon Police Department at 242-2131 or the Jefferson County Crimestoppers at 242-8477.The $500 cash reward is based on the arrest and conviction of the burglars.If you share information with Crimestoppers, you do not have to say your name or give your telephone number and you remain anonymous.
