JEFFERSON COUNTY — —
Two Jefferson County men were arrested early Monday morning following an incident in which a northern Illinois man was severely beaten.
Dustin W. Mannen, 27, of Waltonville, and Jacob D. West, 21, of Nason were arrested at 5:30 a.m. Monday at a residence in Nason. They have initially been charged with home invasion with a firearm, armed robbery with a firearm, armed violence, and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, according to a news release from Sheriff Roger Mulch.
The victim was identified as 25-year-old Edgar I. Merced, whose last known address was Park Forest.
Jefferson County officials received a 911 call from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office shortly before 9 p.m. on Sunday, stating a male subject had telephoned their center reporting a subject being beaten. Deputies collected information and were then dispatched to a Nason residence. No one was home when deputies arrived. Subsequent information gathered informed deputies that a male subject was observed walking on East Saddle Club Road near Nason. Shortly before 10 p.m., deputies located Merced along the roadway. He was transported to Good Samaritan Regional Health Center and then transferred to a St. Louis hospital with severe head injuries. As of late Monday afternoon, Merced was in critical condition, Mulch reported.
A search warrant was produced by State's Attorney Doug Hoffman and signed by Resident Judge Jo Beth Weber. The Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County joint High Risk Team executed the search warrant on Monday morning and Mannen and West were taken into custody.
