New park shelter nears completion

---- —

MT. VERNON — The newest park shelter at Veterans Memorial Park is slated for completion Friday."They are installing the roof panels today," said Mt. Vernon Parks and Facilities Director George Bryant on Wednesday. "They will then be dealing with the guttering system and completing some electrical work."The shelter replaces the wooden shelter structure which was torn down earlier this year."The older facility had wood construction and its life span had run its course," Bryant said. "The concrete flooring had broken and buckled to the point it was not able to be repaired."After demolition, the city went out for bids to build a new shelter, but bids came in higher than anticipated. City officials decided to bid out the materials and have city employees complete the work."It's a steel frame building with galvanized roof panels," Bryant said. "It has a concrete floor. ... I think the community will be very pleased with the new construction."The shelter will have water and electricity, and new fixtures have been installed. The Parks and Recreation Department have been reserving the shelter, and had only discontinued accepting reservations during the time when construction was expected. "We're going to be on schedule with completion, in time for the long weekend," Bryant said. A ribbon cutting for the shelter is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
