Construction tops $10 million in May

---- — MT. VERNON — Construction in the city came in at more than $10 million for May.

The largest boost in construction numbers came from the Drury Development Corp., which received a permit for its $10 million hotel and restaurant building project on Broadway and Interstate 57.

The company demolished its former Drury hotel on the site, as well as the former Thrifty Inn, which is part of the project are. Drury is building a 180 room, seven story facility. There are also plans for two restaurants on the project site. The total estimated cost of the project is $19.9 million.

The new hotel replaces the former building, which was built in 1977 and had 80 rooms.

Other commercial building in May was:

Digit Williams, 815 Veterans Memorial Drive, to put up a sno cone stand at an estimated cost of $4,000;

Calvary Pentecostal Church, 406 N. 44th St., to construct a church addition at an estimated cost of $100,000; and

Tylers Jefferson Motors, Illinois Route 15, to remodel its facility at an estimated cost of $450,000 and a new body shop addition at an estimated cost of $80,000.

Residential building in the city was at $40,900. Residential permits issued in May were:

Hilda Wright, 817 Airport Road, to construct an in-ground pool at an estimated cost of $15,000; and

Norman Piercy, 10882 E. Richview Road, to build a garage office at an estimated cost of $24,900.

Signage permits issued for the month were:

Express Care, 1104 S. 42nd St., at an estimated cost of $45,000;

Illinois Title Loans, 3113 Broadway, at an estimated cost of $1,300;

Homestyles, 815 Veterans Memorial Dr., at an estimated cost of $33,000; and

The American Cancer Society, to place Relay for Life banner signs at Guy Wood Insurance Agency, West Salem Trinity United Methodist Church and at the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Demolition permits issued for the month were:

Susan Edwards-Smith, 1009 S. 25th St5., to demolish a garage building;

Robert McCutcheon, 725 S. 17th St., to demolish a house;

Adam and Melynda Breeze, 116 N. 13th St., to demolish a house and garage;

Rodney and Vicki Pearce, 1405 Wescott, to demolish a garage;

New Life Missionary Baptist Church, 528 S. 19th St., to demolish a church building;

The City of Mt. Vernon, to demolish a house at 428 S. 19th St., a house at 408 S. 15th St., a house at 725 S. 20th St., a house at 1706 S. 12th St., a hosue at 1219 Wescott; a house at 613 Herbert St., and the Horace Mann School building; and

Paul Boyd, 1000 Welkins, to demolish a house.
