---- — MT. VERNON — The Parks and Recreation Department has openings in its Summer Day Camp program.

“Day camp is a great opportunity for kids, ages 4 through 12, to break up the mundane summer,” said Mt. Vernon Recreation Coordinator Wes Plummer. “Kids can meet new people, have fun and make some new friends. It makes the summer a little more enjoyable.”

The day camp started this week, with the theme, Sports Extravaganza. The theme for the week of June 10 is “Gettin’ Dirty”; the them for the week of June 17 is “Pirates Fishing Tournament”; the theme the week of June 24 is “Superheroes”; the week of July 8, the theme is “Moovin’ and Groovin’” and the theme the week of July 15 is “Splish Splash.” There is no camp during the week of July 4.

“It’s a six week camp, but kids can do every week or one or a few of them,” Plummer explained. “Each week has a theme, and that will be the theme for the major activity. There will be lots of sports, arts and crafts and team games.”

Children are fully supervised, with many of the counselors certified teachers.

The camp is held at Veterans Park Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fee to attend is $75 per week. Those attending three or more weeks save $5 each week. Extended care hours are available from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at an additional cost of $3 per hour each day.
