---- — MT. VERNON — Plans to close the east bound Union Pacific railroad crossing on Main Street was changed Wednesday by the railroad.
“The railroad asked to move the work up a day for the project,” said Illinois Department of Transportation District 9 Railroad Technician David Barger. “They will now do the work on Monday and Tuesday for the east bound lanes at that crossing.”
Barger said the west bound crossing on Broadway is now slated to be completed on Sept. 23 and 24.
Barger said the Union Pacific Railroad will replace the ties in the crossing and the crossing panels on the surface as well as place new asphalt.
The initial work on the surface was announced by IDOT on Sept. 4, for the east bound crossing only.
“They now want to do the west bound crossing a week later,” Barger said.
According to IDOT, the closure will now start at 7 a.m. on Monday and continue through 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday for the east bound lanes. The closure for the west bound lanes on Broadway will be from 7 a.m. on Sept. 23 through 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 24.
Mt. Vernon Public Works Director Matt Fauss said there has also been a change to the detour for motorists.
“Vehicles on the east bound lanes will be directed to take Third Street to the west bound lanes,” Fauss said. “One of the west bound lanes will be blocked for east bound traffic for a block to Second Street then back to Main Street. The process will be reversed when the railroad works on the Broadway crossing the next week.”
