---- — MT. VERNON — This summer’s Movie in the Park series comes to a close Friday with a special screening of the 1985 family classic “The Goonies.”

Organizers chose the Steven Spielberg-produced film because it’s an all-time favorite, said Wes Plummer, recreation coordinator for the Mt. Vernon Parks and Recreation Department.

Many parents grew up loving “The Goonies,” and now they can share the movie with their own kids, Plummer said.

“You don’t always get a chance to let your kids see your favorite (films),” Plummer said. “It’s a chance to experience it together.”

The film will be shown at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Veterans Park. There will also be a pre-activity starting at 6:45 p.m.

The Parks and Recreation Department hosts the Movie in the Park series for four months out of the year, June through September.

Films are typically screened on the third Friday of each month. However, this month there was a scheduling conflict so “The Goonies” is being shown a week earlier. Organizers are still hoping for a large turnout.

“Usually, the September movie is one of our most popular,” Plummer said. “It tends to be cooler and it happens earlier in the evening. … We still expect a good crowd, especially if the heat wave breaks.”

Attendance at this summer’s screenings has fluctuated, Plummer said.

The June showing of “Madagascar 3” drew about 200 people, while the July presentation of “Wreck-It Ralph” only attracted about 100 because of rainy weather. Attendance for the August showing of “The Lorax” was right around 200.

Friday’s screening of “The Goonies” is sponsored by Crossroads Community Hospital, which has been a supporter of the Movie in the Park series for the past four years.

Debi Richardson, the hospital’s director of marketing and public relations, said Crossroads usually sponsors the September screening. The series, she said, provides an important service for local families.

“We feel like it’s a great opportunity for families to gather at an inexpensive event,” Richardson said. “I think it’s a great series the park puts on and we’re happy to be a part of it.”

The pre-activity this Friday will be similar to last month’s. It will feature a series of challenges kids can perform for prizes. Also, since the movie this month is “The Goonies,” prizes will be awarded to anyone dressed in a pirate costume.
