---- — MT. VERNON — A Woodlawn man well-known in his community for craftsmanship was arrested on Tuesday facing three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.
Formal charges were filed on Wednesday against Charles E. Sanders, 68, of the 100 block of Sanders Road.
Sanders was arrested by Illinois State Police at 6:08 p.m. Tuesday, following an investigation in cooperation with the Department of Child and Family Services, according to State's Attorney Doug Hoffman, who charged Sanders with three counts of the sexual charges, all Class X felonies.
Judge David Overstreet set bond at $250,000, and Sanders posted $25,000 bond on Wednesday, according to jail records. The conditions of the bond stipulate Sanders is to have no contact with either of the victims and will have no unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18.
According to court records, two counts allege the defendant committed acts of sexual penetration with a child under the age of 13, between 2010 and 2012. The third count alleges the defendant committed an act of sexual penetration with a different victim between 2002 and 2003.
Sanders reportedly is well-known in the community. He is a carpenter by trade, and he and his brother have built several homes in the area. He has also been an elder in the Woodlawn Christian Church for several years, according to a source close to the family.
According to Illinois criminal statutes, Sanders could be sentenced to 6 to 30 years to the Illinois Department of Corrections upon conviction. If he is convicted on multiple counts, he could be sentenced to mandatory life in prison.
Sanders is scheduled to be in court at 9 a.m. on Nov. 8.
