Attorney chosen for murder suspect

MT. VERNON — Public Defender Sean Featherstun was appointed Tuesday to represent murder suspect Timothy S. Newell.

The 42-year-old Bonnie man appeared in video court for a first appearance hearing before Judge Jerry Crisel.

Crisel set Newell’s bond at $5 million and scheduled a preliminary hearing for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 29.

Newell was charged Friday with four counts of first-degree murder in the death of 84-year-old Rita E. “Betty” Newell of Bonnie. Timothy Newell is the adopted grandson of the victim.

The charges allege Timothy Newell stabbed the elderly woman. Newell was previously charged with possession of a stolen vehicle after taking the woman’s station wagon.

Rita Newell’s body was discovered in her home on Oct. 3 by authorities following a call from out of state to check on her well being.

Following a short investigation, Timothy Newell was identified as a suspect and arrested in Missouri. He waived extradition and was returned to Jefferson County a week ago.
