MT. VERNON — A Veterans Day program will be held in Mt. Vernon and the annual Veterans Day parade has been scheduled in Waltonville on Nov. 11.
The Veterans Day program will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Times Square Mall. It is being hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9233 in Mt. Vernon.
Jefferson County Board Chairman Robert White is the featured speaker. Music will be furnished by local musicians, including Nancy Schutte, who will sing the National Anthem; and Cheryl Hunsell, mother of Marine Lance Cpl. J. Kyle Price, who died at the age of 19 while serving in Iraq, will lay flowers at the grave of the unknown soldier.
At 11 a.m. a bell will be rung for each veteran's name read aloud for veterans who have passed away in the past year.
"It's a way to honor our veterans, both living and dead. People have kept our nation safe all these years and we want to honor them for their service," said Post Commander Bruce Miles.
The 28th annual Waltonville Veterans Day parade will be held at 10 a.m. on Nov. 11, beginning at the Waltonville VFW Post 9153.
This year's theme is "United We Stand."
Parade organizer Joe Norris said those interested in participating in the parade do not need to pre-register. Officials will begin lining up for the parade around 8 a.m.
In the past, entrants have included floats, walkers with signs, marching bands, vintage cars and antique tractors and horses.
Norris said the parade route will be the same as in past year — starting at the VFW and proceeding to the Waltonville grade and high schools. A program will be held in the high school gym about 11 a.m. A speaker has been scheduled.
Following the program, a chili dinner will be provided at the VFW.
