Delores J. Powell, 85, of Mt. Vernon, died at 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Jan. 5, 1928, in Granite City, a daughter of Robert and Elsie (Smithpeters) Lyle. She married James O. Powell on Nov. 16, 1950, in Salem. He preceded her in death on June 16, 1990.
She is survived by special friend, Cecil Smith of Mt. Vernon; son, Larry Powell and wife Sharon of Troy; four grandchildren, Malori Newbury and husband Matt of Sesser, Candice Powell of St. Louis, Nathan Powell and fiance’ Dawn Grapperhaus of Aviston and Brittany Powell of Normal; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Winchester, Wyatt Newbury and Caeleah Helm; sister-in-law, Shirley Lyle of Jacksonville, Fla.; and special friends, Carmen Ham and husband Todd of Opdyke.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Robert and Jerry Lyle, one infant brother and one sister, Margie Goad.
Delores worked as the owner and operator of Powell Jewelry in Mt. Vernon for over 40 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Women’s Auxiliary, the American Gem Society, Business and Professional Women, and was a board member for the Jefferson Fire Protection District.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Victor Long officiating. Interment will be in Kirk Cemetery in Ina.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hughey Funeral Home.
