MT. VERNON — The final designs of a new wayfinding system in the city are ready to be presented to the City Council next week.
The Branding Leadership Team is expected to make recommendations to the council for the wayfinding system — a series of signs to direct visitors to areas within the city.
"The signage will include attractions, such as Cedarhurst the Jefferson County Historical Village and the winery," explained Mt. Vernon Tourism Director and BLT member Bonnie Jerdon. "It will include public facilities such as City Hall, the courthouse and the airport."
Jerdon said the plans for the system, which were developed by Merje, Inc., will be easily identified.
"All signs will have a cohesive look throughout the city," Jerdon said. "That will make it easier for visitors to pick out and make their way around town."
Signage throughout the community, and its lack, came to the attention of officials during a branding study completed by Destination Development. In November 2012, the city contracted with Merje at a cost of $74,350 to develop a plan for putting up the signs, design the system and help with implementation.
"The focus of the (Branding Leadership) group is to take highway traffic and move them downtown, to attractions, recreational opportunities and retail establishments," Jerdon said. "It's also an economic development tool to direct traffic to those retail areas and bring additional revenues to businesses."
