Council to discuss bid results

MT. VERNON — — The City Council will be discussing recent bid results for sidewalk and sewer projects as well as an agreement with the Zanola Company for a housing marketing and growth program.

Last week, bids were opened for the sidewalk project on Potomac Boulevard along the Holiday Inn frontage, and another letting for sidewalk and repair in various locations throughout the city.

Eight companies bid on the Potomac Boulevard project, with the apparent low bidder being Krb Excavating Inc., of Trenton at $45,461. Other bids were Depew and Owen Builders, Inc., of Centralia with a bid of $46,888; Doug Eubanks Construction Company of Sesser with a bid of $49,814; Rite-Way Excavating of Lebanon with a bid of $43,390; Lipps Construction of Mt. Vernon with a bid of $55,812; J.K. Trotter and Sons of Mt. Vernon with a bid of $63,143; Bruce Concrete Construction of Granite City with a bid of $67,412.27; and Kieffer Brothers Construction of Mt. Carmel with a bid of $85,036.

There were also eight bidders on the miscellaneous sidewalk repair and replacement projects. The apparent low bidder is Rollie Excavating, with a bid of $211,948, according to City Manager Ron Neibert. Other bidders on the sidewalk projects were Rite-Way Excavating, Doug Eubanks Constriction Company, KRB Excavating Inc., Meador Development, Sheridan Concrete, J.K. Trotter and Depew and Owens Builders.

Bid results will also be presented for sewer lines on South 34th Street from Veterans Memorial Drive, south to Harlan Road.

“There were 12 bidders and all the bids were considerably less than the project estimated cost,” Neibert said. The low bid was from Tech Construction, at $49,969.

“That’s less than half the project estimate, which was at $100,000,” Neibert added.

The council will also be discussing an agreement with the Zanola Company, LLC, which presented a plan for helping housing builders and developers take advantage of opportunities in the city during a workshop session last week.

In other business, the council will:

  • Consider a preliminary and final plat for Michel’s First Subdivision; and
  • Discuss a resolution to establish a “Parks and Recreation Department Scholarship” program.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at the Rolland W. Lewis Community Building at Veterans Park.
