Motorists endanger work crews

MT. VERNON — Motorists are being asked not to go around or move barricades on the Veterans Memorial Drive and South Davidson Avenue extensions.

“The roadway is not complete,” City Manager Ron Neibert said. “There’s a few minor paving issues on the roadway that need to be taken care of, sidewalk paving, then the general straightening up. But, it’s not ready for traffic.”

Last week a construction worker was surprised and almost hit by a motorist who was on the roadway in spite of barricades. Crews are not looking for vehicles, as the road is supposed to be closed.

“If they move the barricades and drive on it, it’s a violation of the traffic code — it’s a construction zone,” Neibert said. “Police will be monitoring it, and for safety sake, please stay out of there.”

Crews are still working on the roadway, but there are some minor issues on the sewer related to the lift station, which is estimated at 75 percent complete.

“We’re hoping to open some time in mid to late spring, to have it open and ready to go,” Neibert said. “That’s our original target date anyway. By spring, it will be ready and open for business.”

Other road projects underway in the city include:

n South 34th Street widening from Peach to Veterans, which is complete to South Water Tower Place, with road, curb, guttering and sidewalks. Construction has halted for the winter on the project, which will continue from South Water Tower Place to Veterans Memorial Drive;

n Widening of North 42nd Street, which is in the design phase;

n Widening of Perkins Avenue from 10th to 12th Streets, which is begin surveyed. A meeting with the Illinois Department of Transportation has been completed;

n South 34th Street from Veterans Memorial Drive to Harlan Road realignment and widening, survey work has been completed;

n Airport Road, next phase of widening and paving to Liebengood Road, surveying is complete, road layout and determination of land/easement requirements are ongoing.
