Mt. Vernon High School Class of ’58 celebrates 50th reunion

The Mt. Vernon High School graduation class of 1958 spent the weekend of Oct. 10, 11 and 12 with our “Hit Parade of Songs,” renewing old friendships and reliving the great memories of the past 50 years.

The activities began with “Celebrate the Good Times, Come On” Friday evening at the Granada Theatre. The theatre marquee lighted the way. Each classmate received a Rams logo black tote bag, designed by classmate Carolyn Turner Kubiak. Directories with classmates’ information including photos were part of the welcome package. The Rams colors of orange and black decorated the tables and the Granada lobby. Streamers and table centerpieces of 45, 78 and 33 1/3 records were stacked to hold silhouettes of dancers. Tables with memorabilia consisting of hundreds of photos and pictures, sports and activities programs, etc. were the focal point of the room. An informal evening of visiting and dining featuring a buffet dinner of burgers, hot dogs with all the fixings along with salads, chips and condiments and were enjoyed by all. Several classmates enjoyed going to the Rams football game and then returning back to the Granada to complete the evening. Showing in the theatre on the big screen was the continuous running of 50 years of pictures from previous reunions scanned and compiled on disc by classmate Bill Randall. The evening was full of hellos, laughter and a few “oh my gosh, look who’s here” moments as we welcomed each other.

On Saturday morning several classmates attended a golf outing which was organized by Don Rightnowar and Gene Harris at Indian Hills Golf Course. This has become a special event which several classmates and their spouses look forward to.

On Saturday afternoon about 30 classmates gathered at the high school for a tour through the buildings and campus. For several, this was the first time in 50 years they had been back to the school. Some of them felt that “these halls are longer than I remembered, and these stairs seem to be steeper than they were in the 50’s.”
