Listen To The Story

MT. VERNON — The Jefferson County Development Corporation is bringing back the Leadership Series training.
“The first series was very successful, so we’re bringing it back again,” JCDC Executive Director Mary Ellen Bechtel said.
The series is held as part of a partnership with Rend Lake College and uses “The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player” by John Maxwell as its textbook.
According to the book, the goal of the series is to help employees intentionally make every action count toward a long term goal; become relationally focused on others; become selflessly willing to take a subordinate role for the sake of the team; and be tenaciously hardworking and optimistic in the face of setbacks.
“We had about 30 people attend the class last time,” Bechtel said. “After they told others about it, more people wanted to attend.”
The class has been scheduled to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. four times — Feb. 7, Feb. 14, Feb. 21 and Feb. 28. Each session will be held at the Rend Lake MarketPlace.
Bechtel has said the original reasons to hold the sessions was as part of the JCDC business retention and expansion program. The class is geared toward supervisors, team leaders, shift managers and key employees in any business.
“We were trying to respond to commends and needs expressed by local industry,” Bechtel said. “One of the most important reasons for our existence is to help local businesses with their efforts to improve themselves and their employees.”
Information on the book states the 17 essential qualities for a good employee or manager is to be adaptable, collaborative, committed, communicative, competent, dependable, disciplined, enlarging, enthusiastic, intentional, mission-conscious, prepared, relational, self-improving, selfless and solution oriented.
