  • Two face trial in robberies BY APRIL TOLER

    MT. VERNON — The jury trial for a man and woman accused of robbing two local convenience stores within days of each other is still expected to take place in April.

    Brandon Poracky, 22, and Savannah Abbott, 19, both of Rolling Meadows Estates, face armed robbery charges after their arrest Dec. 28 for allegedly robbing the Casey’s General Store on South 42nd Street.

    MT. VERNON — There’s a new breed of thieves these days, and they’re not interested in your worldly possessions. They’re interested in your personal information.

    Ray Gilbert, a Mt. Vernon Police Department detective who heads the new MVPD Fraud Alert Web site, says people need to be vigilantly aware of potential identity theft; even small bits of information which thieves glean can mean money out of your pocket.

  • Fall break? District 80 considers taking a week off at the end of October BY APRIL TOLER

    MT. VERNON — Pupils in District 80 currently receive a spring break, Christmas break and summer vacation.

    But with board approval, they may receive a fall break during the next school year.

    Superintendent Kevin Settle presented a proposal Wednesday night asking the board of education to approve the 2006-07 school calendar with the addition of a three-day fall break during the last week of October.

  • City sets hearing on new-school issue By MARY KAYE DAVIS

    MT. VERNON — The City Council will host a public hearing later this month to discuss the city’s possible role in helping to fund the construction of a new high school here.

    City Manager Roy Payne set the hearing for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Rolland Lewis Community Building in Veterans Park prior to the City Council meeting.

  • Things to do: Repair school roof, put in new gym floor BY APRIL TOLER

    MT. VERNON — A preliminary list of summer maintenance projects for District 80 schools was presented to the school board Wednesday.

    Superintendent Kevin Settle said there are four major projects that need to be addressed immediately — a new roof at J.L. Buford Intermediate Center, replacement of the gymnasium floor at Casey Middle School, remodeling of the school district’s Central Office and asbestos removal at Benjamin Franklin Early Education Center.

  • Couple killed on Interstate 57 MT. VERNON — A northern Illinois couple was killed Thursday afternoon after striking a bridge support on Interstate 57 near the Dix exit.
