Betty Lou Meador
Betty Lou Meador, 75, of Mt. Vernon, is now celebrating eternal life with her Lord and husband and those who went on before her, after fighting a battle with brain cancer. She entered her new life at 5:03 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2008, fulfilling her wishes by being at home with her family by her side.
She was born on Nov. 28, 1932, the daughter of John Henry and Minnie (Cooper) Brown. On June 4, 1950, she married Mervin Estel Meador, and he preceded her in death on April 10, 1993.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Revs. Richard McCormick and Gary Davenport officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Betty is survived by two daughters, Delica Lowe and husband Rob of Paducah, Ky., and Gwynn LaJoan Garrison of Mt. Vernon; one son, Brad Meador and wife Stasey of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren, Jill House of Mt. Vernon, Da ‘Awn Smitherman and husband Loy of Holly Springs, Miss., Rob Garrison and wife Missy of Benton, De Lynn Conlee and husband Jeremy of Byhalia, Miss., Kyle Meador of Murray, Ky., and Ryan Meador of Woodlawn.; three step-grandchildren, Brandon Scrivner of Fairmont, W.V., Lexi Scrivner of Mt. Vernon and Thomas Lowe of Elmira, N.Y.; six great-grandchildren, Corey House and Jacey House of Mt. Vernon, Brandon Conlee of Byhalia, Miss., Liam Bradham of Mt. Vernon, Emily Conlee of Byhalia, Miss., Aaron Smitherman of Holly Springs, Miss.; and one step-great-grandson, Brandon Alexavier Scrivner of Fairmont, W.V. Several niec-es and nephews also survive.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Mervin Meador; her parents, John and Minnie Brown; her brother, Carl Brown; brothers-in-law, Ivan Meador, Melvin Meador, Ray Ellis and Charles Owens; and sister-in-law, Loraine Meador.
She was a member of East Salem Baptist Church. Betty worked for 25 years until her retirement at Bethel Grade School where everyone loved her cooking. She loved to dance where she enjoyed being with her friends and always making new ones. She also enjoyed being with her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She will surely be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Good Samaritan and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Ill., 62864.
