Glen Johnson
Leroy Glen Johnson passed away at his home at 5:30 p.m. on May 4, 2008, with family and friends at his side.
He was born on Aug. 23, 1922, to Thomas T. and Lillie M. (Edwards) Johnson in Mt. Vernon.
Glen married Alma E. Bradley on March 19, 1943.
He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy as a gunner aboard a Merchant Marine ship. He was a welder by trade and retired after 37 yeas of service at Taylor Brothers in Tamaroa.
Glen was a Southern Missionary Baptist minister from 1953 to 1996. He had the privilege of pastoring numerous rural churches throughout Jefferson and Marion counties, where he and his family made many friends.
Glen was an avid gardener, fisherman and marble collector. He loved spending time with his family. In his youth, he played softball at the Mt. Vernon City Park.
He is survived by his loving wife, Alma; his two daughters, Frances J. Mahoney of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Ruth Ann Allen and husband Ernest L. of Plano, Ill.; four grandsons, Stephen A. Sparks and wife Darlene of Fort Meyers, Fla., Jonathan B. Sparks and wife Amanda of Hiawasse, Ga., Craig M. Allen and Jocelyn Meyers of Sugar Grove, James R. Allen and wife Lynn of Morris; and one granddaughter, Stephanie L. Allen Huffman and husband Eric of Morris; five great-grandchildren; one brother, William O. Johnson and wife June of Springfield, Mo.; three sisters, Mildred Coleman of Boulder, Colo., Maxine DeMent of Woodlawn, Rosalie Morlan of Grand Junction, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Gene Lambert and husband Charles of Christopher; one brother-in-law, Bill Bradley and wife Rita of Euafala, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Earl G. and Ethel Brayfeld Bradley; four brothers-in-law, Edward Coleman, Gale DeMent, Chester Morlan and Dalton Bradley; and two sisters-in-law, Daphene Wolfe and Chestine Sechrest.
Glen was a member of Old Union Missionary Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to Old Union Missionary Baptist Church or Good Samaritan Hospice in care of Johnston Funeral Home.
Visitation will be tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 141.
