— Mary Catherine Wiegel, 84, of Centralia and formerly of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 3:25 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2008, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Centralia.
She was born in Springfield, Ohio, on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 1923, a daughter of Herbert Walter and Nora Bridget (Martin) Welty. She married Joseph Leo Wiegel on June 6, 1942, in Springfield, Ohio, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 2007.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon with Father Daniel Jurek officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Springfield, Ohio, at a later date.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with a rosary service held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mary is survived by two sons, Terrence Andrew Wiegel of Chicago and Christopher Patrick Wiegel and wife Rhonda of Texico; a daughter, Cathleen Elizabeth Hoffner of Centralia; 13 grandchildren, Denny, Cherri, Carrie, Corey, Michelle, Jessica, Nicholas, Shawna, John Jr., Christin, Sean, Cat and James Joseph; and five great-grandchildren, Morgan, Leah, Nolan, Madison and Garrett.
Her parents; husband; two sons, Michael Leo and Joseph Daniel Wiegel; two infant daughters, Veronica and Sylvia; and one grandson, Joseph David Hoffner preceded her in death.
Mary was a manager at a dry cleaners in St. Louis, was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and AL-ANON, St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon and was active in R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).
For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Ill., 62864.
