Opal L. Peterson
Opal L. Peterson, 92, of Bonnie, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, at st. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
She was born in Harrisburg on March 7, 1916, a daughter of George Washington and Mollie (Williams) Hughes. She married John Donald Peterson on Dec. 30, 1944, in Whittington, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 1976.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Mr. Randy Sells officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Opal is survived by a son, Danny Peterson and wife Judy of Bonnie; grandson, Charles Donald Peterson and wife Yvette of Mt. Vernon; a granddaughter, Michelle McGovern and husband Tod of Waltonville; great-grandsons, Gage Peterson of Mt. Vernon and Seth McGovern of Waltonville; great-granddaughters, Shalan and Alyssa McGovern both of Waltonville; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents; husband; three brothers, Lindell, Homer, and Harold Hughes; two sisters, Margaret Wheeler and Maude Tucker; and niece, Gloria England preceded her in death.
Opal was a member of the Eastern Star and Elk Prairie Christian Church where she played the piano for many years and was active in the women’s group at the church.
For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Alzheimers Assocation and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
