Lois M. Burkett
Lois M. Burkett, 86, Mt. Vernon, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
She was born in Farrington in Jefferson County on Thursday, March 2, 1922, the daughter of Oscar and Zelphia May (Holloway) Lowery. She married M. D. Burkett on March 9, 1939, and he preceded her in death after 44 years of marriage on Jan. 4, 1994.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at New Home Lowery Cemetery in Bluford with Mr. David Houseworth officiating. Interment will follow.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
Lois is survived by two daughters, Sherry Bumpus and husband Jon of Mt. Vernon and Vonda Marcum of Mt. Vernon; nine grandchildren, Dawn Chapman, Car-men Reese, Jason Burkett, John Burkett, Jeff Burkett, Gina Hart-mann, Janetta Stallons, Tra-vis Heppner and Ashley Heppner; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Her parents; her husband; her one son, Larry Burkett; one brother, Zona Lowery; and one sister, Alice Ferguson preceded her in death.
Lois worked for the Henry J. Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., during World War II and was a faithfully active member of Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon for 50 years.
