Dennis O'Connor

MT. VERNON — — Dennis P. O’Connor, 57, passed away at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, April 8, 2012, at the Hospice of Cincinnati.

He was born March 17, 1955, to Dan and Louise O’Connor, in Washington, Ind. They moved to Greenfield, Ind., where he spent his childhood, the eldest of five siblings.

 He graduated from St. Michael’s School in 1969, later graduating from the Latin School of Indianapolis, a pre-seminary boys’ high school for the Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis, in 1973.

He attended Indiana University - Bloomington, graduating in 1977, and participating in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps while studying. He was on active duty from 1978 to 1983. While he was in the Army, he worked in the public relations office at Fort Knox, Ky.

After leaving the Army with an honorable discharge, he worked at several newspapers and publications in Kentucky and Ohio. He spent 10 years at the Catholic Telegraph in Cincinnati.

He married Paula Fey O’Connor in 1983, and they shared 28 years of marriage. They had two children, Colleen O’Connor and Sean O’Connor.

Most recently, he was the executive director of Christians for Peace in El Salvador. He was passionate about helping the poor and marginalized people in El Salvador, and took several trips to the country in order to affect change.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Fey O’Connor, of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter, Colleen O’Connor, of Cincinnati, Ohio; a son, Sean O’Connor, of Cincinnati, Ohio; his parents, Dan and Louise O’Connor, of Greenfield, Ind.; brothers, Steve O’Connor of Greenfield, Ind., and Michael O’Connor and wife Anne Mullins O’Connor of Indianapolis, Ind.; sisters, Julie Crider and husband Stan of Greenfield, Ind., and Christine Brokaw and husband David of Indianapolis, Ind.; sisters-in-law, Monica Mazzone and husband Tony and Mary Hart and husband Thom; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mihovk-Rosenacker Funeral Home, 5527 Cheviot Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45247.

Funeral mass of Christian burial will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. James the Greater Church, 3565 Hubble Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45247.

Interment will follow at St. James Cemetery.

For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christians for Peace in El Salvador for the internship program at crispaz.org, or to the American Cancer Society.
