Carroll Erwin

---- — Carroll James Erwin, 99, of Marion and formerly of McLeansboro, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at 12:36 p.m. at home with his family by his side.

He was born May 6, 1914, in Ponca City, Okla., the son of Harry Oscar and Mabel Wooden Erwin. He married Mary Louise Meeks on June 3, 1934, in Kingman, Kan., and they celebrated 79 years of married life together.

Carroll was employed in the oil fields by Texaco Oil Company where he retired after 36 years of service. Carroll and Mary moved to Illinois in 1938, taking up residence in Marion in 1982.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ceral Springs.

Carroll received his pilot's license in 1962, and enjoyed flying for many years. He received his radio operator's license in 1961. He was known as a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, compassionate friend and a man of deep faith. He has left a five generation legacy of family who will treasure his memory and strive to follow in his footsteps.

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Kenneth Milton Erwin.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his sister, Betty Juanita Switzer of Wichita, Kan.; his daughter, Delores (Don) Bowers of Lake of Egypt; his son, Jerry Lee (Alma) Erwin of Marion; grandchildren, Diana Angell, Dale (Julie) Bowers, Bill (Patty) Erwin, Doug (Paula) Bowers, Tammy Erwin Wheeler, Jeffrey (Dawn) Erwin and Denise (Scotty) Jones; 16 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Ceral Springs, followed by a service at 7 p.m. A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gholson Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gholson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near McLeansboro.
