---- — Emma Louise “Lou” Mezo, 79, of Granite City and formerly of Mt. Vernon, died 12:15 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2013, at Granite City Nursing and Rehabilitation in Granite City.
She was born Thursday, Jan. 11, 1934, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Joseph D. and Ruth Marie (Poston) Mezo.
Lou was the family nanny, caring for the children of her siblings. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Granite City.
She is survived by brother, Wayne Mezo and wife Terry of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, JoAnn Jones of Mt. Vernon and Mary Ellen Cooper of Cahokia; several nieces and nephews, including Brenda Benson of Granite City where Lou resided in her care for 30 years; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William Robert Mezo and John Edward Mezo; and one sister, Doris Marie.
Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
