Betty Westermeier

---- — Betty Jane (Brown) Westermeier, 89, of Zeigler, passed away at 1 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at the Herrin Hospital.

Betty was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Cambria, to Fred F. and Viola May (Richey) Brown.

She married William C. “Bill” Westermeier in Oct. of 1943, in St. Charles, Mo. He preceded her in death Dec. 5, 1972.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jane Westermeier of Murphysboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Tom Stomberski of O’Fallon, Mo.; four grandchildren, Lori Westermeier and her partner, Amy Spizler of St. Louis, Gina Westermeier-Skaggs and her husband, Jon of O’Fallon, Susan Merchak and her husband, Assaad of Wildwood, Mo. and Colin Stomberski of Cleveland; five great-grandchildren, Emma, Sofia, Bennett, Rachel and Avery; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Connie Brown of West Frankfort; and two brothers-in-law, Joseph and James Westermeier.

Her parents and a brother, Monte Brown preceded her in death.

Mrs. Westermeier was a member of the United Methodist Church in Zeigler. She had worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for the Stotlar-Herrin Lumber Yard in Zeigler and retired as secretary to the business agent at Southern Illinois Laborers District Council in West Frankfort. She was a life-time and very active member of the Zeigler American Legion Auxiliary.

Funeral services for Mrs. Westermeier will be held at 1 p.m. today at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler with Pastor Lynette Barnett officiating. Burial will be at Miners Cemetery east of Royalton.

Visiting hours are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Westermeier are suggested to the Zeigler United Methodist Church, the ZR United Methodist Women or Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
