Ruth Roeder, 95, of Opdyke, died 10:17 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor Residential Living Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was born Monday, May 6, 1918, in Jefferson County, the daughter of William Samuel and Ora (Marlow) Bumpus. She first married George M. Schwenninger on April 21, 1938, in St. Louis and he preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 1969. She later married Russell Roeder on May 6, 1971, in Mt. Vernon and he preceded her in death on Aug. 13, 1991.
Ruth was a cook at Opdyke Grade School and Mt. Vernon Township High School. She worked at Harry’s Market for 30 years and later at the Mammoth Department Store where she did sewing and alterations. Ruth also owned and operated the Opdyke Sewing Shop. Ruth loved horses, gardening and enjoyed going dancing. She was known for her homemade pies and all members of her family received a handmade quilt from her. Ruth was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by son, Donald G. Schwenninger and wife Mavis of Opdyke; granddaughter, Rina Schwenninger of Mt. Vernon; dear lifelong friend, Larry Pierce of Elgin; and several nieces and nephews, including Duane Allison and wife Linda of Nason.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and one sister, Nadine Allison.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Chapel in Woodlawn with the Rev. Gary Davenport officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
