Leota M. Bancroft, 86, of Opdyke, died 8:14 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at her home in Opdyke.
She was born Saturday, March 19, 1927, in Franklin County, the daughter of Floyd and Mary Ann (Cockrum) Dethrow. She married Harry L. Bancroft on May 20, 1947, in Whittington. He preceded her in death on March 27, 2012.
Leota first worked at the Mt. Vernon Shoe Factory and later as the owner and operator of Bowens Ice Cream. She then worked at the Woolworths Store and ended her career at Dowzer Electric. She was a member of Opdyke Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by son, Connie Bancroft and wife Natasha of Opdyke; granddaughter, Hannah Bancroft of Opdyke; sister, Margaret Stowers and husband Lee of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Norman Dethrow; and two sisters, Geraldine Cathcart and Betty Dethrow.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Keith Neal officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.
Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
