---- — Charles J. Brown, age 84, of Woodlawn, passed away at 11:46 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Charley was born April 24, 1929, in Jefferson County, the son of Wayman Charles and Ada A. (Shannon) Brown. On April 9, 1951, in Mt. Vernon, he married Doris Rightnowar and she survives in Woodlawn.

Mr. Brown was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the West Long Prairie Christian Church in Waltonville. He worked for many years for Contel Phone Company which later became Verizon from which he retired. He also enjoyed his years of farming. He still owned and operated B&B Auto Sales in Woodlawn that he started in 1975.

Charley is survived by his wife, Doris Brown of Woodlawn; son, Randy Brown and wife Joan of Woodlawn; daughter, Becky Warner and husband Steve of Mt. Vernon; three sisters, Wanda Summers of Bonnie, Phyllis Marshall and husband Bob of Woodlawn and Linda Hood of Waltonville; sister-in-law, Carolyn Brown of Waltonville; brother-in-law, Bill Rightnowar and wife Norma of Woodlawn; grandchildren, Randy Brown Jr. of Woodlawn, Jamie Brown and friend Jackie of Woodlawn, Sara Martin and husband Dave of Mt. Vernon, Emily Gutzler and husband Shane of Mt. Vernon and Rachel Warner of Mt. Vernon; five great-grandchildren, Nathan Brown, Jace Brown, Jacob Martin, Brianna Gutzler and Bradyn Gutzler; and also several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents Charley was preceded in death by two brothers, Buddy Ray Brown and Nolan Brown; infant brother, Marvin Brown; and two brothers-in-law, Tom Summers and Ronald Hood.

Funeral services for Charley will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Randy Sells officiating. Burial will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
