Edward Dale Smith, 84, of Mt. Vernon, formerly of Johnsonville, passed away 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Crossroads Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
Dale was born Feb. 10, 1930, to Homer and Lillian (Trotter) Smith in Paxton. He married Correna Rich on Nov. 18, 1953, at Sims, and she survives.
Dale served as a sergeant in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He served as deacon, Sunday school superintendent and teacher at Ellis Mound Missionary Baptist Church at Wayne City. He was a charter member of the Johnsonville Ruritan Club. He was a rural mail carrier for Cisne and Johnsonville for almost forty years. He also served as president and vice-president of Baltimore Cemetery Association at Wayne City.
Dale is survived by his wife, Correna of Mt. Vernon; five children, Michael Dale (Sheila) Smith of Woodlawn, Mark Edward (Renee) Smith of Olney, Monty Joe (Denise) Smith of Fairfield, Marlena “Susy” (Terry) Krutsinger, of Bluford and Marty Lyn (Pam) Smith of Geff; one sister, Gnell Wood of Mt. Vernon; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Paul; one sister, Joyce; and one son, Murry.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ellis Mound Missionary Baptist Church. Full military rites will be at the graveside. Burial will be at the Baltimore Cemetery at Wayne City.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Memorials may be given to Ellis Mound Missionary Baptist Church and will be accepted at the church or at Hosselton Funeral Home.
