James Philip Newell, 78, of Scheller, passed away 8:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
James was born June 30, 1935, in Kell, the son of Mason and Mary Kathryn Jeffries Newell. He married Karen Kay Lynch on July 19, 1958, in Scheller, and she survives in Scheller.
Mr. Newell was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1954-1958. He spent a year in Korea at the close of the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Southern Illinois University, Department of Agriculture and was always interested in crops and soils. He was a certified agronomist. For 27 years, he worked for Funk Brothers Seed Company which became Ciba Giegy Seeds. He was a member of the Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon. He served as elder in five different Christian churches during his lifetime. He was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Cardinals baseball games. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Newell of Scheller; son, Jeffrey Newell and wife Kelly of Chatham; daughter, Joan Garza and husband Rene` of Tomball, Texas; son, Jay Newell and wife Jamie of St. Charles, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Noelle Deaton and fiancé Colby Burling, Marissa Valle, Dakota Newell all of Tomball, Texas, Evan, Jace and Myka Newell all of Chatham and Sydney and Chloe Newell of St. Charles, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Charlet Nowland and husband Gale of Waltonville and Carole and husband Charles Dees of Bonnie; brother-in-law, Douglas and wife Joyce Lynch of Carlinville; nephews, Jarrod Newell and wife Natalie of Carmi, Joshua Newell and wife Jodi of Zionsville, Ind. and Steven Burzynski and wife Robyn of Opdyke; nieces, Kimberly Schaffer and husband Steve of Chicago, Angela Summers and husband Douglas of Bonnie, Shelley McDowell and husband Mitch of Mt. Vernon, Teresa Taft and husband Alex of Springfield, Myra Tosh and husband Ryan of Carlinville and Samantha Winka and husband Steven of Scheller; and several uncles and an aunt.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Mason Alan (Marilyn) Newell and Evan Lee Newell; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Ethel (Allen) Lynch; and two nieces, Twila (Dees) Snow and Gayla Lynch.
Funeral services for James Philip Newell will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville with Pastor Randy Sells and Pastor Jamie Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville.
